Landscaping
A large and stately tree, ideal as a shady tree. Do not plant where fruit will drop onto concrete as the fruit will stain. Fast-growing deciduous tree with large serrated leaves.
-
Culinary & Nutrition
A dark red/black fruit (similar to a boysenberry). The fruit will form on year-old wood. The fruit is sweet and juicy and contains vitamins C, K, B and E, potassium, magnesium, iron and fibre. Also contains anti-inflammatory properties. Best eaten fresh, but it can also use in baking, making wine and liqueurs.
-
Growing Conditions
Best grown in full sun away from pathways and driveways. A deep, well-drained loam soil is preferred, fairly drought tolerant, but likes plenty of water when in fruit. Initially, prune for sound structure, and removing tips will encourage more fruiting spurs. A copper spray in autumn will help prevent black spot and powdery mildew.
